2015 is off to an exciting start. Natural Products Expo West, the world’s largest organic, healthy and natural products show just finished in Anaheim, California. And just when you thought it couldn’t get any bigger it did! According to the post show press release attendance topped 71,000 industry members with 2700 exhibiting companies. This year’s trade show floor took over the entire Anaheim Convention Centre campus and new products were exhibited at the Hilton Hotel Anaheim.
The editors and analysts at New Hope Media, producers of the show, identified 5 macro trends influencing the marketplace including:
- Transparency advancements – consumers want to know what is in their food and how it got there and industry is using innovative techniques to respond
- Ancient wisdom gets wiser -products with simple and understandable ingredient lists and minimal processing are increasing in their appeal to consumers
- Paleo 2.0 – products for Paleo diets are popping up in new and diverse categories
- Packaging Innovated – attractive, informative and /or edible packaging comes to the forefront
- Protein Invasion – protein is appearing in new categories and in new forms like “meat bars”

“Vegan proteins (pea protein and hemp protein) are getting a lot of attention. They are a big category right now. Probiotics and digestive health products will be the next big trend along with EFAs (essential fatty acids). Energy drinks and shots are also doing well – but these are natural energy drinks – no caffeine chemicals.”

According to industry experts vegan is going mainstream. No longer just for consumers concerned primarily about animal welfare, vegan products are increasingly associated with “health food”, “clean ingredients”, “weight loss”, “environmental responsibility” and “social responsibility”. The other growing category that caught my attention was the natural based mosquito repellent wipes and sprays (citronella and other natural ingredient based).”

December 31, 2014 was to mark the end of the availability of citronella based insect repellents in Canada. However, at the last moment Health Canada had a change of heart and is now allowing currently registered citronella based products to continue to be sold while they review the regulatory framework and available scientific evidence.
Insect repellents are regulated as pest control products in Canada and require premarket review of safety and product registration.
