With the Specialty Coffee Expo in Seattle just wrapping up, we were inspired to take a look at coffee packaging design. Let’s be honest, looks matter. Packaging for specialty coffee is one of the industries that has been ever evolving and very dependent on trends and its audience. Coffee packaging tends to tell a story and is often a big part of the reason why a consumer is drawn towards a certain brand.
When looking at how trends are evolving, coffee packaging is starting to move away from a natural, textured look and more towards minimalist colour and space with a huge nod towards custom illustration. This is very on point with current 2018 design trends. In addition to this, information and text has been pared down significantly to help push minimalism and create focus. Companies are aware that it’s not only hard to design around a large amount of text, but consumers also quickly lose interest. These changes all work together to create a more unique and high end feel and helps the brand stand out.
Form is also a big component of design when it comes to coffee. Typically, we see coffee in tins or bags, but brands are starting to be a lot more creative offering their product is a variety of shapes and sizes of containers, bottles, boxes, bags, etc.
Consumers and producers alike are also becoming more and more conscious of environmental impacts of packaging and therefor many roasters are moving away from double layered packaging or packaging that is not recyclable. Compostable packaging is also becoming very popular.
However it continues to develop and change, we look forward to seeing this industry evolve in its unique packaging choices and design.
