2023 LOOK BACK:
2023 was a whirlwind for team SNI.
We travelled across the continent to meet some of the most innovative members of the industry.
We are so grateful to be able to continue learning from such incredible individuals!
Let’s rewind to the end of 2022.
Do you remember the food trends that SNI predicted would become prominent in 2023?
Let’s see if we were correct!
Seafood alternatives
Team SNI anticipated the continued spike in popularity of plant-based alternatives, predicting that seafood alternatives would be the hot product of 2023. According to a 2023 report by McKinsey and Company, the growing global demand for shellfish and fish is not sustainable in comparison to the amount of seafood that is caught or farmed through aquaculture.
The plateau of available seafood played a role in the upswing of the popularity of alternative tuna, salmon caviar, scallops, squid, crab, and shrimp. Consumers who are concerned about the health impacts of seafood or who are conscience of the environmental impositions of the aquatic industry are reaching for plant-based seafood products like smoked salmon made of carrots and crab cakes made of jack fruit.
Environmentally conscious food choices
As the threat of climate change becomes more urgent than ever, team SNI predicted that we would see consumer’s shifting their food habits to support a more eco-friendly lifestyle. According to an Index published by Tetra Pak, 54% of consumers surveyed stated that they consider the future of the planet when making food decisions.
This sentiment is echoed in the rising popularity of plant-based meat, cultivated meat, and fermented foods.
We are so excited to see what 2024 has in store.
