SNI Creative Services: Top Food & Design Trends

Last month, we introduced you to our Creative Services team--the all-female team of industry experts that make up the design expertise here at SNI.

Today we are digging deeper into what makes Christel, Jada and Alexis tick, and show what their diverse presence brings to the idea boards with SNI projects.

DESIGN TRENDS ARE ALWAYS CHANGING.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE NEW TREND?

Photograph of alexis in a big orange chair with caption: Designs that pull inspiration from past decades! When I see branding and illustrations that have a 70’s feel to it, it feels nostalgic, even though I very much wasn’t around during that time. It feels like a walk down memory lane, like revisiting a simpler time, and I just find that I gravitate towards branding that invokes those feelings.
Photograph of Jada with caption beside: I’m a big fan of how the minimalism trend and nostalgia/vintage/retro trend are merging. I really appreciate the colours, typefaces, and imagery being used in such an intentional and simplistic way that allows it to look new and trendy yet still evoke feelings of nostalgia. Some of my favourite examples are the branding for Burger King, Matheson Food Company, and Olipop. I also love keeping up with type trends. I’ve been noticing more and more designs relying heavily on bold, unique, playful typography which is exciting to see after the minimalism trend went too far and took all the fun out of trendy type.

FOOD INNOVATION IS ALSO DYNAMIC,
WHICH FOOD TREND IS ON YOUR RADAR RIGHT NOW?

I think the sudden spike in brands creating new beverages and snack foods using functional, good-for-you ingredients is really interesting.

Health and wellness has been trending for years now and I’m enjoying seeing all the new product innovation finally coming onto shelves.

I love a little treat and if I can have one that does something good for me then sign me up.

Food science is just so fascinating. While my diet is not constricted to being completely meatless, I enjoy the challenge of dedicating my meal planning and cooking adventures by exploring meatless options on a regular basis. The transition in the food industry towards plant-based ‘meat’ products has been incredible to watch and experience. Textures, tastes and sustainability all play different roles in consumer decision-making in this area.

For me, when I don’t eat meat for a long time, I crave fish like crazy! I’ve noticed a recent shift towards seafood substitutes that are plant-based and still practice the fundamentals by satisfying the texture that seafood lovers want, but also are seasoned with ingredients from the sea like seaweed.

A report by McKinsey called “The next wave: Alternative seafood solutions,” predicts 14% growth in global fish protein demand through 2030. Companies like Seed to Surf really appeal to the seafood-lover in me as a consumer, and their packaging design is just delightful!

I love when brands think about how their packaging is impacting the environment and taking steps towards minimizing waste. I’ve seen edible packaging which is super cool, and packaging that contains a detailed story about what they’re doing to better the environment, that sort of thing.

I have a lot of respect for businesses that consider their impact, and that kind of thing sells, too, so it’s a win-win. I think if there’s an environmentally conscious version of a particular product, a lot of people would feel good about purchasing that. I can’t speak for everyone but I personally really enjoy supporting businesses that make a difference.
