Tell us a little bit about what got you here – your education and your passions that brought you to be part of team SNI?

I graduated from the University of Guelph with a BSc in Nutritional and Nutraceutical Sciences, but at that time didn’t even know the regulatory affairs world existed. I accepted a job working for a dietary supplement company where I was immersed in food and supplement regulations, with the bulk of it being focused on the American market.

I spent ten years there, and then moved into consulting where I was able to help many more companies meet their goals. I have been in consulting now for over ten years and feel lucky that I have been able to marry my interest in regulations with my love with working with clients – and I’m excited to now be a part of the team here at SNI!

We know you enjoy regulatory affairs; what is something else you’re passionate about that you’d like to share with our readers?

The most important thing in my life is my relationships. My family comes first – I love spending time with my husband and kids. I also do my best to cultivate the friendships I have made over the years, from staying in contact with friends from elementary school, to regular dinners with my local friends. I’m an extrovert and love to spend time with all the important people in my life.

Quick, teach us one fun fact about food or health product regulations that we probably didn’t know before.

This year we are celebrating the 20-year anniversary of Canada’s Nutrition Facts Tables. Prior to 2003, it was completely voluntary to provide nutrition information on a product label, and there was no regulated format to do so.

If you had to describe yourself in just 3 words to someone, what words would you use?

Authentic, empathetic, and open-minded.

Finally, why are you so passionate about regulatory affairs?

I love that regulatory affairs professionals have a hand in helping so many parts of society – we support industry by helping them bring compliant products to market, we support consumers by ensuring the products they buy are safe and not misleading, and we even support government by helping ensure the regulations they issue are understood and followed by industry.

I also love that there is so much to learn about regulatory affairs in all of the different sectors – foods, dietary supplements, Natural Health Products, etc. With regulations constantly changing in both Canada and the US, it is very rewarding helping clients ensure they are on top of all of everything they need to know to be successful.
