Crossing the border out of the USA– regulatory considerations and possible funding support

Our team at SNI has helped countless clients successfully export their products from the US market into other countries. When it comes time to evaluate the potential export of your products, we are here to help!

Our team has expert knowledge on product classification, formulation considerations, and all aspects of regulatory compliance including proper labelling.

We also know this a huge step and that it can be costly to conduct market research, develop an export plan, and make all required labelling updates for a successful launch, so our team has summarized a couple of funding options below.

The USDA, through funding it provides via Foreign Agricultural Services (FAS), helps companies offset the cost of getting their labels compliant for export markets.

Through four partner organizations based on specific geographic areas of the US – Food Export Northeast, Food Export Midwest, Southern US Trade Association (SUSTA), and Western US Agricultural Association (WUSATA) – up to 50% of the costs associated with label compliance for export markets are recoverable if brands meet the requirements of two specific programs.

Food Export Northeast and Midwest call their program the Branded Program

WUSTA and SUSTA call their program
Fund Match

The requirements for both programs are similar.

1.

For your products to qualify they must be value-added agricultural products such as food ingredients, food service products, pet food products, seafood products, or other agricultural products.

2.

The products must contain at least 50% agricultural content/ingredients and must have a clearly visible US origin statement.

3.

The company must be a small or medium-sized company (less than 500 employees), must be a US business entity.

4.

The company must have offices in the designated region of the particular organization.

In addition to funding the cost of label compliance including reviews and packaging design, both programs also support companies that qualify for attending certain trade shows in the US, Canada, and internationally.
